Dover is located in Kent, which is at the southeastern tip of England. Geographically, it is also the closest point in the UK to Continental Europe, which is why a port was built there so that every year, ferries travel between Dover and France (Calais and Dunkirk) and Belgium (Ostend). Dover is also a port from which cruise ships leave. Which is why the parking facilities need to be extensive.

The port is 125kms (70 miles) to the south east of London, and you can get there directly by taking the M2/A2 and the M20/A20. These connect to the M25 motorway which goes around London. It is approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes from Central London.

People will park at Dover if they are travelling as a foot passenger on a ferry, or are joining a cruiseship or a coach tour at Dover. You are able to park your car in short stay car parks or long stay car parks. There are clear signs that will show you directions towards each car park, as well as clear displays of parking fees at the entrance to each car park. All of the official car parks have been awarded national "secured car park" status. This includes regular security patrols of all car parking areas.

There is parking at the ferry terminal, the cruise terminals and also the Hoverport. At the ferry terminal, should you be a passenger with P&O Ferries or SeaFrance and you wish to leave your car at Dover, then you should park at the Eastern Docks. The multi-storey car park at the is at the entrance to the ferry terminal, and both the short-term and long-term car parks are there. You can also park for free in front of the travel centre for 15 minutes (in order to buy tickets). Tickets for the car park are issued to you by machine as you enter. When you arrive back you need to pay your parking fee in the Arrivals Hall at the pay machines before you retrieve your car. You can then take the lifts to and from the parking level when leaving or collecting your car.

The cost of car parking starts at £2.00 for the first two hours, then £4.00 for the next two hours. Between 12 and 24 hours it is £8.00, and then the price goes up by £2 for every 12 hours. This means that parking for up to 3 days costs £16.00, after which parking costs £3.30 a day.

There is also short stay and long-stay car parking at the cruise terminals so you can find the right parking for you whether you are going away, dropping someone up or picking someone up.
